Renown umpire Rudi Koertzen dies in car crash; farewell to legend who officiated more than 300 matches

JOHANNESBURG: Rudi Koertzen, one of the best umpires in international cricket has died in a car crash. 71-year-old former umpire lost his life in a car accident at Still Bay in South Africa. Born in South Africa, Koertzen worked in the railways. Due to his interest in cricket, he quit his job and chose umpiring. He officiated international matches for 29 years from 1981 to 2010.

He had gone to Cape Town two days ago to play golf with his friends. The accident occurred when he was returning to home in Mandela Bay. Koertzen retired in 2010 after umpiring Australia-Pakistan match at Lord's. He has officiated 331 international matches.
