NEW YORK: Former champion Venus Williams has proven that age is no barrier and returned to the US Open. Venus, who returned to the field at the age of 45 through a wild card, was defeated in the first round by Czech Republic's Karolína Muchová, but she inspired tennis fans around the world. Venus lost in a three-set battle. Score: 3-6, 6-2, 1-6.
Venus, who lost the first set, overcame Muchova, who is 15 years younger than her, 6-2 in the second set. Muchova fought back in the final set. Venus was the US Open women's singles champion in 2000 and 2001.
Carlos Alcaraz, Barbora Krejcikova, Tiafoe, Casper Ruud, and Andreeva won in other first-round matches at the US Open. This year's Australian Open winner and 2017 US Open finalist, American Madison Keys, lost in the first round to Mexican Renata Zarazúa.
