GUWAHATI: South Africa defeated former champions England to reach the Women's World Cup final. South Africa won by a convincing 125 runs. Chasing a target of 320, England were bowled out for 194 in 42.3 overs. South Africa will face the winner of the second semi-final between Australia and India on Thursday. The final will be played in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. This is the first time a South African team has reached the final of the ODI Cricket World Cup.
Chasing a huge target, England got off to a shaky start. Openers Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont and third-placed Heather Knight were dismissed for ducks. The score was just one run at this stage when England lost three batters. Captain Nat Seaver Brunt 64 (76) and Alyse Capsay 50 (71) showed glimpses of a comeback during the fourth wicket partnership, giving hope. After adding 107 runs, this partnership fell apart, and South Africa took control.
Among the later batsmen, Danielle Wyatt made only 34 (31). Lindsay Smith, who came in to bat at number 10, scored 27 (36), but it was too late for any heroics as the game had already slipped away from the English side. Sophia Dunkley 2 (10), Charlotte Dean 0 (1) and Sophie Ecclestone 2 (12) were the others who were dismissed. Lauren Bell remained 9* (12) not out. Marizanne Kapp, who took five wickets, completed England’s destruction.
