Tanur boat accident: Charge sheet filed against 12 people including government employees

MALAPPURAM: Police have filed a charge sheet in the boat accident case in Tanur that killed 22 people. A police team led by Tanur Deputy Superintendent of Police V V Benny filed the charge sheet in the Parappanangadi Judicial First Class Court. The charge sheet names 12 people including government employees as accused. The charge sheet was filed after 85 days after the accident.

12 people including the owner of the boat, Nassar, Alappuzha Port Chief Surveyor Sebastian Joseph and Beypore Port Officer Prasad have been charged. Also, steps have been taken to obtain prosecution permission from the government against the accused who are government employees. The charge sheet has 13,186 pages including 865 documents and 386 witness statements in the incident. The owner of the boat, Nassar, is in judicial custody.

The boat accident took place in Tanur on May 7. The cause of the accident was that 52 people boarded the boat, which could accommodate only 24 people. Boat owner Nassar is the first accused in the case. The case was registered by Tanur Police Inspector Jeevan George.
