WASHINGTON: The Indian truck driver, who made a reckless U-turn killing three people in Florida, was found to be an illegal immigrant, the US Department of Homeland Security said. This led to a fresh spat between the Trump administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom's office.
The Trump administration raised questions about how Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant, obtained a commercial driver's license. Harjinder Singh's license was issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The Department of Homeland Security expressed concern about public safety.
Meanwhile, the California Governor's Office clarified that Harjinder Singh entered the US in 2018 when Donald Trump was president. The Governor's Office also informed the Trump administration that no commercial licenses are issued to those living in the country without documents.
Harjinder Singh entered the US illegally in 2018. He was initially denied a work permit during the Trump administration. However, the Biden administration later approved his work permit in June 2021. Homeland security sources indicate that Singh obtained a commercial license in California during the Biden administration's time.
