NEW YORK: An Indian student died after a fire broke out in her house in the USA. The incident happened Thursday morning at Albany in New York. The dead has been identified as Sahaja Reddy Udumala of Jangaon district in Telangana. She was 24. The fire originated in a nearby building and then spread to her house. She was sleeping when the fire broke out and was unable to escape. She sustained 90% burns. The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed her death in a post on X.

The consulate informed that they are in touch with her family and is providing all possible assistance. Sahaja Reddy is the eldest daughter of Udumula Jayakar Reddy, an employee of TCS in Hyderabad, and Gopumaria Shailaja, a government primary school teacher. The woman came to the United States in 2021 for higher studies. The family came to know about Sahaja's death while they were hoping that their daughter would return home soon after completing her studies. Steps have been taken to repatriate the woman's body. Friends in the United States have started fundraising for the travel expenses.
