MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, from May 8 to May 10. The ceasefire comes in the context of Russia celebrating the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. Victory Day, observed on May 9, marks the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II. Foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, are expected to attend the celebrations.
Putin stated that the decision was made on humanitarian grounds. "We hope Ukraine will follow Russia's example. If Ukraine violates the ceasefire, our forces will retaliate. Russia is ready for peace talks without preconditions to address the underlying causes of the Ukraine conflict," Russia said in a statement.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, responded by questioning why Russia is waiting until May 8 if it truly desires peace, and insisted that the ceasefire must be genuine and not merely for a parade. The United States also reacted, expressing hope for a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine. During Easter, Russia had announced a 30-hour ceasefire in Ukraine, but both sides came forward accusing each other of violations.
