‘History takes its revenge’, Sheikh Hasina soon after mob vandalizes father’s house in Dhaka

DHAKA: After a mob vandalized and set fire to the residence of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka, his daughter and deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called for justice. She said that her opponents can erase the structure, but cannot wipe out the history of her family. The incident happened early morning when she was interacting with her party activists on social media.

The protesters, calling it a pilgrimage center of fascism, vandalized and set fire to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence at Dhanmondi 32. This was after they had called for riots on social media.

Hasina was speaking at an online event organized by the Chhatra League, the student wing of her party, the Awami League. At the same time, there was a call on social media to demolish Mujibur Rahman's house with a bulldozer. Then, at 8 pm, protesters arrived with hammers and other tools and started demolishing the house. The attackers also destroyed Mujib's mural.

The residence was set on fire at around 9.30 pm. The media reported that a crane and an excavator arrived later and demolished most of the house by 2 am. Hasina reacted strongly after learning that her father's residence had been set on fire. They can demolish a building, but they cannot destroy history. History will take its revenge. The current interim government seized power against the constitution. Hasina also called on the people of Bangladesh to unite against this government.
