MOSCOW: After being ousted, Syria's former President Bashar al-Assad and his family have reportedly sought asylum in Russia. Assad, along with his wife and three children, is currently residing in Moscow, where they allegedly lead a luxurious lifestyle similar to the one they had in Syria. After ruling Syria for two decades and turning the country into a hellish state, he left with vast amounts of wealth.
Bashar and his family arrived in Russia with approximately 1.60 lakh crore rupees. Using this money, Bashar purchased palace-like flats and luxurious residences in Moscow. Even before fleeing, Assad had made arrangements to stay in Moscow. His wife, Asma, who was born into a wealthy British family, had faced criticism in Syria for living a life of luxury. Many had compared her to the infamous Shakespearean character 'Lady Macbeth'.
According to reports, Asma had spent millions of dollars to decorate the Syrian president's palace and buy clothes. It is believed that they have investments worth thousands of crores of dollars in various banks around the world, as well as business partnerships in large companies. Assad's family had recently purchased around twenty apartments in Moscow, a report said.
Russian officials have revealed that President Vladimir Putin directly instructed the provision of political asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family. However, the exact location where Assad and his family are residing remains undisclosed, as Russian Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to provide further information.
