
DHAKA: At a time when the country continues to witness unrest following the murder of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, another bomb explosion has rocked Dhaka. One person was killed in a crude bomb attack near the New Eskaton AG Mosque in Dhaka. The dead has been identified as Saiful Siam (21).
The incident took place at around 7.10 pm on Thursday. The attackers threw crude bomb from the Maghbazar flyover. The attackers then fled the scene. Siam, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to the hospital but died. Siam was an employee of a private factory.
Police launched an investigation into the incident. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Masood Alam said that more clarity is needed on the motive behind the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Meanwhile, the attack came just before the visit of Tariq Rahman, son of exiled former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Tariq Rahman is visiting Bangladesh after 17 years. Security was tightened in the city ahead of Rahman's visit. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman condemned the attack.
Meanwhile, Hadi's brother, Sherif Omar Hadi, has come out against the Yunus government over the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. He said the assassination was part of a plan by the Yunus government to sabotage the upcoming elections next year.
