
NEW DELHI: Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to him at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh were also present at the ceremony.
Surya Kant is a native of Hisar and the first to become Chief Justice of India from Haryana. He will have his term till February 9, 2027. Surya Kant started his legal practice in the Hisar District Court and became Advocate General of Haryana at the age of 38. He was appointed as a judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 and as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. He became a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
