TRIPOLI: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi (53), son of Libya’s ex-dictator Moammar Gaddafi, has been killed. Saif's lawyer and family have confirmed his death. He was shot dead by assailants at his home in the town of Zintan. The motive for the attack is unclear. Reports say assailants disabled security cameras at Gaddafi’s house and shot him after a confrontation.
Born in 1972, Saif was considered a successor to Gaddafi. He played a key role in Libya's relations with the West from 2000 until the collapse of the Gaddafi regime. Saif was imprisoned in 2011 for his role in the brutal suppression of anti-government protests after his father was ousted. He was sentenced to death in a speedy trial in 2015, but his sentence was later commuted.
