CHANDIGARH: A new controversy has erupted in the IPL after Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was seen using an e-cigarette during a match against Punjab Kings. The incident was captured on camera, sparking widespread debate. The visuals were recorded in the 16th over of the match held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Tuesday. The broadcast camera briefly focused on the dressing room, where Parag was seen using an e-cigarette.
The production, sale and use of e-cigarettes are completely banned in India. Smoking is also strictly prohibited inside stadium premises and dressing rooms. This could lead to disciplinary action against Parag. Parag had scored 29 runs off 16 balls before getting out at a crucial stage of the match. After returning to the dressing room, he was seen smoking while sitting near teammates Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The visuals quickly went viral on social media.
Earlier this season, Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh for using a mobile phone during a match. Similar disciplinary action may now be taken against Parag.
Parag, 24, became captain after Sanju Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings. However, he has struggled with the bat this season, scoring only 81 runs in seven innings before this match. Any disciplinary action could be a setback for the young player.
Despite the controversy, Rajasthan Royals secured an impressive win against Punjab Kings. After Parag’s dismissal, strong performances from Donovan Ferreira (52*) and Shubham Dube (31) guided the team to victory. With this win, Rajasthan Royals moved to third place in the points table.
