Rapper Vedan’s recent interview with a television channel was viral for his atypical opinions on social issues. Along with support, there were criticisms too from many quarters against Vedan’s opinion on the 'Jai Shri Ram' chants. Amidst mounting criticism, popular director and Bigg Boss winner Akhil Marar joined the bandwagon to come down heavily against the rapper.
Akhil Marar:
“Vedan first appeared on the music scene in 2016. Even before he entered the mainstream music scene, Vedan had a considerable fan base. When he got embroiled in a controversy over the tiger tooth case, I supported him vehemently. However, after the case, Vedan forgot about his art and music and started preaching politics.
Vedan said that the chant Jai Shree Ram was always used before committing a murder. Allahu Akbar prayers are heard five times in Kerala. Even terrorists use the same before committing gore murders. So, according to Vedan’s theory, those people, devotedly chanting the same in Kerala, might be terrorists too.
Another is Vedan’s absurd statement about DNA. He said that Dalits, despite all their work, will not be able to succeed academically, due to their DNA. What nonsense!
Take my case. My family was fighting poverty, and it was my job to study for them. I did it and became the school topper. I use Marar as a suffix in my name, as per numerology. Marar caste names are seldom used, as many feel embarrassed for being recognised as a lower caste. We have to work for uplifting the lower caste sections in society. Barely singing and frolicking among youngsters won’t be of any purpose.
It took a big controversy for Vedan to increase his remuneration. I didn’t get involved in any rape cases to become popular and to increase my remuneration. It was after turning naysayers into admirers that I started demanding higher pay for inauguration functions.”
