BOGOTA: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said that India is now facing an attack on democracy. Rahul made these remarks against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government during an interaction at EIA University in Colombia. He also spoke about India's growing importance on the global stage.
"In India, there are many religions and languages and the democratic system ensures equal rights for all. However, now democracy is being weakened," Rahul said. His remarks have drawn a sharp response from the BJP.
“India, with its 1.4 billion people, has immense potential. Unlike China, India has multiple languages, religions, and cultures. It is a complex system, but one that can give much to the world. One of the biggest risks India faces is internal divisions. Unlike China, suppressing people is not acceptable here. When the British ruled India as a superpower, we fought back and won independence in 1947. Today, we are going through a transition- from coal to petroleum, and now to electric motors. We are caught between the US-China power struggle. Even though we are a growing economy, we are unable to generate enough jobs. That is because we do not have a truly democratic framework," Rahul Gandhi said.
The BJP, however, accused Rahul of criticising India on foreign soil. 'Rahul Gandhi goes abroad and attacks Indian democracy. He wants to fight against India’s system. At times, he even asks the US and UK to interfere in our matters. Now he is targeting everything- from the army to the judiciary, from the Constitution to Sanatan,' BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla wrote on X.
