NEW DELHI: The controversial bill to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Minister or ministers who are sentenced to imprisonment for up to one month for an offence punishable with five years or more has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The decision was taken due to strong opposition uproar.

The 130th Constitution (Amendment) Bill was referred to the JPC. There was a strong opposition protest when the bill was introduced in the House today. Trinamool Congress members tore up the bill and threw it at Home Minister Amit Shah. Due to the uproar, the House was initially adjourned till 5 pm and then to meet tomorrow.

The opposition had alleged the other day that the bill was aimed at toppling the governments in states ruled by opposition parties. The 130th Constitution (Amendment) Bill, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Act, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 were introduced in the House by Union Home Minister Amit Shah today.
