MUMBAI: 15 people were killed after a building collapsed in Maharashtra. The incident happened last midnight in Virar East. A portion of the four-storied building of Ramabai Apartment collapsed killing 15. The building is 13 years old.

A one-year-old resident was celebrating her birthday here just before the building collapsed. The child and her mother are among the dead. The child identified as Utkarsha Omkar Jovil and her mother Aarohi Joyal were found in the rubble. They were immediately taken to the hospital, but their lives could not be saved. The search for those trapped in the rubble, including the child's father, Omkar Jovil, is in progress.

The building built in 2012 has 50 flats. The corporation has found that the building was built illegally. The death toll is said to have increased due to the inability of rescue workers to quickly reach the accident site with the necessary vehicles and equipment. Six injured in the accident are under treatment. Nittal Sane (47), the builder of Ramabai Apartment, has been arrested.
