NEW DELHI: A four-storey building collapsed early Saturday morning in Shakti Vihar, Mustafabad, Delhi, killing 11 people. Among the deceased were three women, four children, and the landlord. Twenty-two people were rescued, with those having minor injuries receiving primary treatment and then released. The collapse occurred around 3 am when most residents were asleep.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force, District Disaster Response Authority, Delhi Fire Services, police, and local volunteers are working to find anyone still trapped under the rubble. An investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched.
Locals reported that the ground shook during the collapse, and many initially thought it was an earthquake. They saw smoke and dust after coming outside. Water from a nearby sewer had made the building walls wet and weak. Additionally, construction work was underway to build a new shop on the ground floor, which involved demolishing some walls. Residents believe this may have contributed to the collapse.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said the disaster was caused by buildings constructed without following safety norms. She promised strict action against officials who approved the construction despite violations.
