NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has strongly criticised a woman who demanded five crore as alimony to dissolve her marriage that lasted for a year and two months. The bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala warned the woman that if she insists on her demand, she will have to face strong action.
The woman's husband is an engineer at Amazon. The husband had promised to pay Rs 35 lakh as alimony, but the wife demanded Rs 5 crore. "You will be making a mistake by calling her back. You won't be able to keep her. The dreams are very big," Justice Pardiwala pointed out to the husband. The court, which described the demand of Rs 5 crore as unreasonable, said that such a stance was not right.
The court made these remarks while considering the divorce case last Thursday. The Supreme Court had asked the separated couple to negotiate a settlement. The Supreme Court also indicated that if the wife's position does not change, the court will have to pass an order she does not like. The court said it hopes that the wife will proceed in a fair manner and conclude the case very soon.
The court asked both the parties to appear at the mediation center of the Supreme Court. The matter will be considered again after the mediation report is submitted.
