NEW DELHI: A freight train created panic after it travelled driverless at a scary speed of 100 km in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The train ran from Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab in the absence of a loco pilot. The train was carrying stones and travelled past five stations without any assistance from the loco pilot.

All initial attempts to stop the train went in vain and it was only after some laborious effort by railway staff that the train was brought to a halt in Unchi Bassi in Mukerian, Punjab, using emergency brakes. Railways also made an effort to deviate from all other train routes and block all crossings to prevent any road traffic calamity.

According to railway officials, the driver forgot to pull the handbrake after starting the engine, as he went somewhere urgent. This resulted in a scary incident. Railway has also started an investigation into the case.
