KOLKATA: As midnight hours struck the clock on Wednesday, women protestors hit the streets of Kolkata en masse to protest against the brutal rape-murder of a young doctor in RG Kar medical college. However, things went awry since then as some miscreants entered the area and charged attack at the protestors. The assailants destroyed public properties, roughed up doctors, and even ransacked two police jeeps in the area. The police were dumbfounded and had to take ample time to discern the happenings. By this time, the damage was already done as the miscreants grew in number, forcing the protestors to flee the area.

According to the police, a group of about 40 people entered the hospital premises and vandalized the items. The assailants pelted stones at the police officers. It is also reported that the police fired tear gas at the protestors. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal reached the spot at around 2 am and checked the situation.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee expressed shock at the incident and vowed to bring the assailants before law. Meanwhile, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the attack was carried out by TMC goons of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to tamper with the evidence.

A female doctor was found raped and murdered in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9. Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday.
