
CHENNAI: Five people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu. The deaths were reported in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Theni districts. In Thiruvavur, a woman was electrocuted to death. The deceased has been identified as Nannilam native Jayanthi (40). Due to the heavy rains, a yellow alert has been issued in five districts of Tamil Nadu.
The renowned Kurukkuthurai Murugan Temple in Tirunelveli got flooded after water rose from the Thamirabarani River. The authorities have issued warnings to the people living along the banks of the river. Nearly 15,000 acres of farmland in Nagapattinam town were submerged in water. With the situation worsening in Thoothukudi, an NDRF team arrived in the district and initiated rescue operations.
After a government hospital in Thoothukudi got flooded, patients were shifted to a safe place. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the intensity of the rain has now reduced in Chennai and other delta districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a low-pressure area is likely to form in the South Andaman Sea today. The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea as this low-pressure area is likely to intensify into cyclone 'Senyar' by Thursday.
