India signals alarm over Central Asia turmoil; cites critical threats to trade and energy security

NEW DELHI: The Government of India has formally expressed escalating concern regarding the deteriorating security situation in Central Asia and the Middle East, as direct hostilities between Iran and the United States continue to destabilise the region. Following the return of numerous Indian nationals, including students and labour professionals, to domestic soil over the last forty-eight hours, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a comprehensive statement emphasising the geopolitical and economic stakes for the nation.

The Ministry noted with regret that despite international appeals for de-escalation following the initial outbreak of conflict on February 28, the regional environment has significantly worsened during the holy month of Ramadan. In its official communiqué, India reiterated its previous calls for all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint, safeguard civilian populations, and pivot toward diplomatic resolution. The MEA underscored that as a significant neighbour with a vested interest in regional stability, India views the current trajectory of violence as a direct threat to collective security.

Of particular concern to New Delhi is the vulnerability of critical maritime trade routes and the energy supply chain. Given that a substantial portion of India’s petroleum imports and commercial cargo transits through the Gulf and Iranian waters, the central government is monitoring the situation for potential shocks to the Indian market. The Union Ministry of External Affairs concluded its report by affirming that the administration remains prepared to take all necessary measures to protect national interests and maintain energy security as the situation evolves.
