LUCKNOW: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court ordered an inquiry into allegations that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is holding dual citizenship. The court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to conduct an inquiry directly or through central agencies.
The High Court's intervention came on a petition filed by BJP worker S. Vignesh Shishir seeking registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi. The Special MP/MLA Court in Lucknow had dismissed the petition on January 28, stating that the court had no jurisdiction to decide on issues related to citizenship. The petitioner approached the High Court challenging this order.
The High Court observed that the allegations made in the petition are serious and therefore require a detailed investigation. The petitioner claims to have documents and emails from the British government proving Rahul Gandhi's British citizenship. The petition also points out that a person with a foreign citizenship is not eligible to contest elections in India or remain a member of the Lok Sabha.
The complaint was initially filed in a court in Rae Bareli. However, on December 17, 2025, the High Court transferred the case to Lucknow.
