
MURSHIDABAD: Ex-Trinamool Congress MLA from Bengal, Humayun Kabir, laid the foundation stone to build a Babri Masjid-styled mosque. Trinamool Congress had recently suspended Humayun Kabir from the party. The mosque is planned to be built in Murshidabad. His followers marched to the place carrying bricks to support him. High security has been imposed at Murshidabad in anticipation of the event.
The ceremony took place at Beldanga in Murshidabad. The stone-laying ceremony was held this afternoon under the leadership of Humayun Kabir. MLA laid the stone in the presence of about 2000 followers after chanting quotes from the Quran. Humayun Kabir claimed that three lakh people would participate in the event. Police and central force have provided extreme security at the place to avoid communal riot.
Humayun Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party after declaring he would build a mosque in Murshidabad modelled on the Babri Masjid. Harsh criticisms arose aginst the MLA from places including the BJP. BJP accused Mamata of using MLAs to polarise votes and promote religious division. Some criticised that this was a move made focusing on the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, although this issue reached the High Court of Kolkata, the court informed that it cannot interfere in this issue. The bench under the chair of the Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul said that the responsibility to ensure peace is vested in the state government.
