CHENNAI: A suspected train sabotage attempt was reported in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The attempt was made on the Erode- Chennai Yercaud Superfast Express. A huge iron rod was found on the tracks. A major accident was averted due to the timely intervention of the loco pilot.

The train left Erode junction at 9.01 pm on Tuesday. Three judges of the Madras High Court were also on board

The loco pilot, after spotting the iron rod on the track near Kaligoundampalayam, made all efforts to bring the engine to a halt. Despite his best efforts, the train ran over the iron rod, though at a slow speed. This resulted in the engine suffering damage. The railways said that a major tragedy had been averted, while an investigation was launched. There have been similar attempts to sabotage trains in Tamil Nadu in the past.
