NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry has sought suggestions from various states as part of the 'One Nation, One Police Uniform' initiative. It has written to 17 states, including Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal, asking them to provide detailed information by November 4.
The Centre also sought details regarding the quality, design and cost of police uniforms. In addition, it has sought information on the annual uniform allowance currently sanctioned to police personnel, rank-wise and the approximate cost of a pair of uniforms presently in use across each state or Union Territory. The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) will be responsible for preparing a common uniform for all police forces across the country. The BPR&D will study the fabric, colour, insignia and cost of the uniforms.
It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who first introduced the idea of a common police uniform in 2022. He said that just like 'One Nation, One Ration Card,' 'One Nation, One Mobility Card,' 'One Nation, One Grid,' and 'One Nation, One Sign Language,' the country should also consider the idea of 'One Nation, One Police Uniform.'
