NEW DELHI: Indian Railways may soon implement a hike in train ticket fares, particularly for AC and sleeper coaches. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways has put forth a recommendation to revise fares, suggesting that AC ticket prices should be adjusted in proportion to the operational expenses incurred by the railways.
At the same time, the report proposes that fare concessions for non-AC travel in suburban trains should remain unchanged. It also emphasizes the need for cost-cutting measures in various railway development projects. Additionally, the committee has recommended introducing a dynamic pricing system for AC and premium train tickets, similar to airline ticket pricing.
The report further highlights the importance of reducing reliance on budgetary allocations and encourages private sector participation in railway development projects, including the Amrit Station initiative. With substantial investments being made in track doubling, electrification, modernization, and safety enhancements, the railway authorities are balancing infrastructure expansion with financial sustainability.
While a hike in AC fares appears likely, increasing sleeper class fares—where a significant number of passengers travel—could trigger public opposition. Officials are reportedly evaluating the potential impact before making a final decision on the fare revision.
