NEW DELHI: After the major plane tragedy in Ahmedabad, there have been many concerns about the safety of air travel. All the discussions are about the safest seat on the plane. Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, the lone survivor of the Ahmedabad plane crash, was sitting in seat 11A, in the middle of the plane, next to the window in front of the wing.

This is the window seat on the port side of the plane. The emergency exit is next to it. Since it is placed in the middle, people do not choose this seat. The passenger in this seat can only exist at the end. Although it is a window side seat, this seat does not have a window due to the cabin air conditioning system. Now, aviation expert Angad Singh has responded to the concerns about the safest seat on the plane.

Angad Singh said that if we look at the statistics of plane crashes over the years, the seats at the very end of the plane or on the right side are safer than the seats in the middle. Meantime, he pointed that there is no other word to describe Vishwas's escape than a miracle.

Seat 11A is located in the first row of economy class on Air India flight 171. This seat is arranged just behind the business cabin and close to the emergency exits on the left. When the plane hits the ground, the front-left section, including 11A, collapsed. The upper part of the plane suffered the most damage.

Meantime, Mitchell Fox, director of the US-based Flight Safety Foundation, said that each accident is different and the possibility of survival cannot be predicted based on the location of the seat.

According to a 2007 study by Popular Mechanics of plane crashes since 1971, passengers in the rear of the plane are more likely to survive. Some experts also suggest that the winged section provides more stability.
