Shop owner attacked over suspicion of selling beef; search in flat of students from Kerala

NEW DELHI: An owner of a shop was allegedly attacked on suspicion of selling beef. Chaman Kumar, a 44-year-old Nepali national who runs a grocery shop in Delhi's Vijay Nagar, was beaten by a mob of around 50 people on Wednesday night. Police said the incident happened following a complaint from a 15-year-old that he had sold meat to students of Delhi University.


The boy posing as a student from Kerala enquired about beef for a birthday party. He alleged that the shop owner initially denied selling meat but later agreed to sell him some the following day. The boy claimed to have bought meat for Rs 400/kg from Kumar. The boy then contacted members of the NGO, they came entered the shop and attacked Kumar.


When the issue escalated, SFI students from Delhi University also came forward to save Kumar from the assault. The clash continued till 2 am. The students were also injured while saving Kumar from the attack. Later, the police arrived and brought the situation under control. The authorities also informed that the beef seized from the shop has been sent to forensic lab for examination.


Meantime, the mob that attacked Kumar also asked the police to conduct raids on the residences of students from Kerala and northeastern states living nearby.
