MUMBAI: A youth who murdered a hitchhiker to fake his own death has been arrested. He committed the act to get the insurance money. Ganesh Chavan of Latur committed the Sukumara Kurup model murder in Maharashtra. Chavan offered a lift to the hitchhiker Govind Yadav on Saturday and then set him on fire.
The accused confessed that he committed the murder to repay the loan he had taken to build a house. He planned his death after taking an insurance policy of Rs one crore. As part of it, Ganesh gave lift to Govind Yadav from Ausa. After making him consume liquor, he was dragged to the driver's seat, fastened the seatbelt and set him on fire. To mislead the police and also convince his family that he was dead, Chavan left his bracelet near Yadav.
Since the police did not know who the dead was, they searched for the owner of the car and started an investigation. After the owner said that he had lent the vehicle to his relative Ganesh Chavan, they tried to contact him on his phone, but it was switched off. Based on all this information, the police confirmed that the dead was Ganesh Chavan.
The body was handed over to his relatives after the postmortem. However, during the investigation conducted after suspecting that the death was a murder, Ganesh Chavan's wife gave a statement that he has an affair with another woman. When she was questioned, the police came to know that Ganesh Chavan was alive and that he was communicating with her through a different number. He was later arrested for murder. The police are also investigating whether he had received help from anyone else to commit the crime.
