KARUR: Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Karur on Monday and met with the families of victims and those injured in the stampede at the campaign rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Karur, accompanied by Union Ministers L Murugan, Nainar Nagendran and the district collector. The Union Minister met those undergoing treatment at the hospital and inquired about their condition.
41 people died and over 100 were injured in a stampede during a TVK rally held last Saturday. Police and judicial investigations into the accident are underway. The police registered a case against TVK general secretary N Anand and Karur district office bearers under sections including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Meanwhile, Vijay announced a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the victims of Karur stampede. He also promised to give Rs 2 lakh to the injured. The Prime Minister's National Relief Fund had announced Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The Tamil Nadu government had also announced Rs 10 lakh and Rs 1 lakh to the victims and injured, respectively.
