CHENNAI: An unexpected ban on whistles was enforced during the T20 World Cup matches at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Police did not allow spectators to carry whistles into the stadium during Sunday’s group match between New Zealand and Afghanistan.

According to reports, the restriction was imposed in view of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, as the whistle is the election symbol of actor Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Police also reportedly prevented shops near the stadium from selling whistles.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) clarified that they had no role in imposing the ban.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings’ popular slogan is “Whistle Podu” (Blow the Whistle), and the franchise even has an official song by the same name. Whistling is a common and vibrant part of the atmosphere during matches in Chennai.

Meanwhile, TVK strongly criticised the move. Party spokesperson Felix Gerald said that whistling is common at sporting events worldwide, including football matches, and adds to the excitement. He also remarked that a whistle symbolises stopping a foul in a game, alleging that the Tamil Nadu government is “full of fouls.”
