CHENNAI: Renowned Tamil director Venkat Prabhu has responded to the sexual assaults in the Tamil film industry in the wake of the Hema Committee report. Venkat Prabhu is the director of super hit Ajith film ‘Mankatha’ and much awaited Vijay film ‘Goat’. The director opined that the time has come for the Tamil film industry to come clean on the allegations. His response was in an interview given to a national media.
‘I have two daughters. There should be safe places for women. Punishment should be strengthened for wrongdoers. They should be afraid to continue doing such acts. Violence against women is happening in all sectors including media, IT and sports. As the film sector is always on media's attention, such news will spread quickly,' said Venkat Prabhu.
The director also responded to questions about the sexual allegations leveled by singer Chinmayi against lyricist Vairamuthu and actor Radha Ravi. His response was that the Tamil film industry has started the process to look into the cases.
Meanwhile, Chinmayi criticized Venkat Prabhu's response. 'Venkat Prabhu is someone I like as a person. However, he is wrong to say that the film industry is taking action on such allegations. The Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) is doing nothing. ‘No direction has been given regarding safety for women in work places,’ she said.
Vairamuthu had denied the allegations. He said that if an official complaint is filed against him, he will face legal action.
