MUMBAI: Ratan Tata, the esteemed former chairman of Tata Sons, passed away on October 9, leaving behind a legacy of business acumen, philanthropy and profound compassion for animals. Known for his deep love for dogs, Tata’s devotion to his pets was so great that he once turned down an invitation from King Charles to stay by the side of his ailing pet dog.
Tito, his cherished German Shepherd, held a special place in Tata's heart. It was Tata’s wish that Tito would be well cared for even after his death, and this sentiment is reflected in his will. Rajan Shah, Tata’s chef, has been entrusted with Tito's care. Shah had previously cared for another dog named Tito and adopted the current German Shepherd, also named Tito, around six years ago.
In addition to Tito’s care, Tata’s will also make provisions for his long-time advisor and executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu. Tata’s brother Jimmy Tata and his half-sisters are beneficiaries as well, with a significant portion of his assets, valued at over Rs 10,000 crore, allocated to them.
Ratan Tata’s legacy includes notable properties like a 2,000-square-foot beach bungalow in Alibaug, a two-storey house on Juhu Tara Road in Mumbai and fixed investments valued over Rs 350 crore. Additionally, he held a 0.83% stake in Tata Sons, the conglomerate's holding company, valued at $165 billion.
