KOCHI: A 20-year-old man was allegedly verbally abused and brutally beaten by the police after seizing his car for defaulting on EMI payments. The policeman of Ernakulam North Police Station, who impounded the car without reason, was found guilty and suspended from service.

The CPO of the station, Umesh, seized the car from the 20-year-old and took it to his quarters. After parking the car there, the 20-year-old was called to the North Station, where he went through a horrible ordeal.

It is alleged that Umesh repeated the insults and threatened the 20-year-old to pay the defaulted amount.

After the 20-year-old and his family filed a complaint, an internal investigation was conducted by the police department. As part of the investigation, the CCTV footage of Ernakulam North Station was examined. The investigation was led by Cheranellur inspector.

Based on the examination of the CCTV footage from Cheranellur Police North Station, there is a possibility of action against more policemen.

It is not clear why Umesh intervened when there was no need for the police to intervene in connection with a car's EMI.
