Escapee Balamurugan in Tamil Nadu; contacted wife on phone

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Reports say Balamurugan, a notorious criminal who escaped from police custody, is in Tamil Nadu. The police have got evidence confirming it. Police said that he had called his wife from Coimbatore.

Balamurugan escaped from the custody of the Tamil Nadu police at around 9.45 pm on Monday. He reached Coimbatore early Tuesday morning. He then called his wife from the phone of a passerby. His wife is in Tenkasi.

The police are searching for him by focusing on pilgrimage sites. The investigation is being carried out in collaboration with the Q Branch of Tamil Nadu. The Q Branch questioned the person who gave his phone to Balamurugan to call his wife. His statement is that Balamurugan wanted the phone for an urgent matter.

Balamurugan (44) of Kadayam in Tamil Nadu, is an accused in 53 cases, including robbery and attempt to murder. He had previously escaped from a Tamil Nadu police vehicle in a similar way. He escaped on a stolen bike that day. In 2021, the Kerala Police arrested Balamurugan from Marayur in a robbery case in Tamil Nadu. After his release, Balamurugan took revenge by committing a series of thefts within the limits of Marayoor police station. He was in Viyyur jail after being arrested by the Kerala police. In the meantime, he was taken to be produced in court in connection with a case in Tamil Nadu.
