OTTAPALAM: With digital payment frauds becoming increasingly common through fake apps, the police have issued a warning to business establishments. Merchants are advised to verify whether the amount has actually been credited to their account when customers make payments via digital methods.
Recently such fraud incidents have been reported in various parts of the state. Most establishments accept payments through popular digital payment apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm. However, fraudsters have been using fake versions of these apps to carry out scams.
The method typically involves the fraudster purchasing goods and then pretending to make a payment using a counterfeit app. They show a fake payment confirmation screenshot to the shop owner and leave the shop, giving the impression that the payment has been made.
Due to the rush in the shop, shop owners often fail to double-check if the money has actually reached their account. Since these fake apps closely resemble the original ones in appearance, it becomes difficult to identify them at a glance. If someone expresses doubt regarding the payment, the fraudsters often blame network issues for the delay in transaction confirmation.
Should exercise caution
The police have strongly advised the business community to confirm that the payment has been successfully credited to their account before proceeding with any sale. Failing to do so significantly increases the risk of being defrauded.
