IDUKKI: A man has been arrested for stealing the gold chain of his grandmother after attempting to suffocate her. The incident took place at Machiplavu near Adimali, where the victim, Mary, resides. The accused named Abhilash is the son of Mary's son.

The incident took place the other day. 95-year-old Mary has been living with her son and his wife. The theft took place while they went to the church. While Mary was lying on the bed, Abhilash allegedly pressed a pillow against her face and forcibly removed the gold chain from her neck.

Mary's son and daughter-in-law discovered the incident upon returning from church and immediately reported it to the police. The accused was arrested during the subsequent investigation. Although Abhilash initially denied the crime, he confessed to the theft during questioning based on evidence obtained from surveillance cameras in town.

Police said Abhilash had previously been arrested in a similar case and was released from Peermade Jail just a few days ago. He claimed to have sold the stolen chain in Nedumkandam. However, the chain has not yet been recovered. Mary suffered minor injuries to her neck and chest. The accused has been remanded.
