KOCHI: In a shocking incident, a youth rode a luxury bike at high speed through the passenger crowd on a platform at Ernakulam North railway station, evading security staff. Railway Police and RPF officers chased him, but he abandoned the bike and fled. The incident took place at 4:40 a.m. on Tuesday on platform number two. The rider has been identified as Ajmal, a native of Mudikkal in Perumbavoor. He is currently absconding. Railway Police have launched a search for him.
A BMW G 310R bike worth Rs 4 lakh was seized. Investigations revealed that Ajmal had rented the bike three days earlier from a company named EVM at Padamughal, Kakkanad. The rental charge was Rs 65 per hour.
The incident occurred just after the Pune-Kanyakumari Express had left the station. Many passengers were present on the platform at the time, while another train was entering the station. Ajmal reportedly entered the platform through a small side gate used by passengers on the eastern side of the station.
Although a security guard tried to stop him, he sped ahead. Police officers ran after the bike, but Ajmal abandoned it at the end of the platform after removing the key and fled the spot. He was later identified using the ID documents submitted at the rental firm. Police said that Ajmal is also an accused in a drug-related case.
Possibility of sabotage being probed
Railway Police are not ruling out the possibility of sabotage. Ajmal was carrying a red bag at the time of the incident, raising suspicions about his intentions in driving onto the platform. Officials said the motive will only be clear after he is caught and questioned. The lapse in station security is also being investigated.
