KOZHIKODE: Another case of brain-eating amoeba has been reported in Kerala. An 11-year-old girl from Chelari in Malappuram, has been diagnosed with the disease. She is presently undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The child, who was suffering from high fever, was admitted to the hospital yesterday.
The child's samples was collected last night after she showed symptoms. The test was conducted at the Microbiology Lab of the Medical College. Health experts said that tests to find the source of the disease will be conducted soon. The number of people infected with amoebic encephalitis has been increasing recently.
Meantime, the swab test results of the siblings of Anaya, a nine-year-old girl from Thamarassery, who died of amoebic encephalitis, are negative. The test conducted at the Microbiology Lab of the Government Medical College revealed that the child did not have amoebic encephalitis. The children were admitted to the Maternal and Child Care Center of the Medical College on Monday following viral fever. The hospital authorities said that the children's health condition is currently satisfactory.
Sanoop's daughter Anaya died of amoebic encephalitis at Anappara in Thamarassery on Thursday. The dead Anaya and her siblings had practiced swimming in a pond near their house three weeks ago. The health department's initial assessment is that this pond was the source of the disease. A three-month-old baby and a 40-year-old man, who are being treated at the Medical College after being confirmed to have the disease, are continuing to be treated in the intensive care unit.
