NEW DELHI: A notice for adjournment motion has been issued in parliament over the demand from Kerala MP Dean Kuriakose to decommission the 130-year-old Mullaperiyar Dam. In the notice, the Kerala MP highlighted the threat the dam poses to the people of five districts, and termed it a ‘water bomb'.
“The decommissioning of this dam, one of the oldest in the world, should be done considering the imminent threat to the lives of people nearby. All parliament procedures should be stopped to discuss the matter” Dean Kuriakose beseeched the parliament to seriously discuss this issue, which is threatening the lives of five million people in five districts of Kerala.
“Mullaperiyar is a water bomb and a new dam is needed. The Central Government should discuss this matter with the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.” the Kerala MP also requested an amicable talk to settle matters between the CMs of both states. According to the Dam Safety Act of 2021, it rests upon the government of the two states to reach a consensus on whether to build a new dam.
