ALAPPUZHA: A woman, who was critical after giving birth to a child, died on Sunday in Alappuzha. Jariath (22), a native of Thevalakkara, Kollam, was undergoing treatment at Vandanam Medical College Hospital. The delivery took place at Karunagappally Taluk Hospital. Jariath was admitted to Karunagappally Taluk Hospital on the 14th of this month. Jariath gave birth on Friday morning and was immediately shifted to Vandanam after becoming critically ill. She was on ventilator support but died on Sunday morning.
The relatives of the deceased woman have alleged medical negligence in Karunagappally Taluk Hospital. The relatives of the woman say that there was a mistake in administering anaesthesia, and said that a doctor was brought in from outside to perform the anaesthesia. The relatives are currently protesting in front of the Vandanam morgue.
However, the Karunagappally Taluk Hospital authorities denied committing any error in the treatment. The delivery was by caesarean section. The hospital has a doctor for anaesthesia. In the absence of this doctor, another expert was brought from Kundara Taluk Hospital to administer anaesthesia. Upon shifting from the operating theatre after the delivery, the blood pressure level of the woman dropped considerably. Despite all efforts, it did not return to normal. She was then referred to Vandanam. The cause of death may be cardiomyopathy. The hospital authorities say that this can be confirmed in the postmortem report.
