THRISSUR: The number of dengue fever cases in Kerala has reached 321 in two weeks following the summer monsoon. 1300 people are under treatment with symptoms. Two people have died, according to the Health Department. Both deaths were in Thiruvananthapuram. Two people have died due to rat fever (leptospirosis) in Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts. Dengue mosquitoes usually multiply and the disease spreads during the monsoon season. This time, three times more dengue fever has been reported than last summer. The Health Department has found that mosquitoes are breeding in water in plant pots inside flats and houses.
There is a possibility that the disease will spread with the onset of the monsoon. If proper cleaning, including pre-monsoon cleaning, is not done properly, rat fever will also spread, in addition to dengue. More than 900 people have contracted chickenpox in two weeks. Chickenpox is more prevalent in the districts north of Ernakulam.
