KOZHIKODE: An elderly man, who went to attend the (MGNREGS) employment guarantee scheme, was attacked in broad daylight. Moideen Koya (72) was beaten by his former neighbour, Aziz Haji to avenge an incident that took place almost 45 years back.

45 years ago, a boundary dispute between Moideen Koya and Aziz Haji left a long-lasting grudge between the two. At that time, the locals intervened and resolved the problem. Later, Aziz Haji moved to another area.

On Monday, Koya, along with others, moved to Haji’s field for work. Aziz Haji was not there at the time. However, the news soon reached him about Moideen Koya working in his field. Haji immediately dialled up Suhara, who was in charge of employment, and demanded that Moideen not be allowed to work in his field.

Koya was assigned to work at another place. Aziz Haji, who was by then waiting on the roadside, stopped Koya while he was moving to his workplace and beat him up badly. Koya fell to the ground and suffered injuries after Haji started to thrash him with sticks.

Hearing the commotion, other workers rushed to the spot and stopped the fight. Moideen Koya was admitted to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital by his family members. His relatives filed a complaint with the Thamarassery police.
