THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AI cameras installed for traffic monitoring in Kerala are back in operation. These cameras are designed to accurately detect and impose fines for violations. Due to financial constraints, fines were not being collected regularly earlier, but now the process has resumed actively. Since their installation in June 2023, the total number of recorded violations has exceeded 98 lakh in a span of 18 months.
The automated enforcement system is part of the Safe Kerala project, which introduced 726 AI cameras at key traffic hotspots. This initiative, costing Rs 230 crore, has resulted in fines worth over Rs 600 crore being issued so far, out of which Rs 400 crore has been collected. Since the cameras became operational, Rs 631 crore in fines has been imposed in total, with Rs 400 crore collected.
In the financial year that ended on March 31, 2025, violations detected by these cameras led to fines amounting to Rs 273 crore. Of this, Rs 150 crore has been collected. The most frequently recorded violation is riding without a helmet, followed by not wearing seat belts and triple riding on two-wheelers.
