KANNUR: Discontent is brewing within the CPM over the continuous action taken by the party against former district panchayat president P P Divya in the suicide of ADM Naveen Babu. Divya's exclusion from the state leadership of the Democratic Women's Association has now ignited new controversies.

After the death of Naveen Babu, Divya was demoted from the district committee to the branch level. She has now lost the post of women's association now. However, a section of activists complain that the party does not take the same approach to other leaders facing similar or more serious allegations.

A Padmakumar, a senior leader of Pathanamthitta has been jailed in the gold smuggling case and the critics point that the party has not yet taken strict action against him. It is argued that the party, which is protecting Padmakumar despite the setback in the local elections, is taking swift action in Divya’s case.

It is being discussed now that the party unitedly protected P K Shyamala, who was accused in the controversy related to the suicide of a businessman in the Anthoor municipality. The party, which recruited Shyamala then, has now elevated her as the state joint secretary of the Mahila Association. In a similar situation, alienating Divya by the party and the organization has led to protests among a section of workers in Kannur.
