KOCHI: Union Minister Suresh Gopi visited the house of Sister Preethi Mary, who was arrested in Chattisgarh, in Angamaly. She was later granted bail. Suresh Gopi was criticized for not responding to the issue nor visiting her family. In between this, he visited her house.
Suresh Gopi visited the nun's residence during his journey to Kothamangalam. He spoke to the nun’s family. Her family had earlier said that Suresh Gopi had supported them. Despite being granted bail, the nun is still in Chhattisgarh. Her parents and brother are at her house in Angamaly.
Sister Preethi Mary, a member of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Assisi, and Sister Vandana Francis of Thalassery, were arrested on July 25. The nuns, who work at Fatima Hospital in Agra, were arrested when they arrived at Durg railway station to pick up three girls for domestic work.
The brother of one of the girls had also arrived at the station. Bajrang Dal activists stopped the nuns and informed the police, alleging forced conversion and human trafficking. They also alleged that one of the girls had not come with her consent. A case was registered against the nuns on charges of human trafficking and conversion. The nuns were then remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Durg jail. The two were released from Durg jail nine days after their arrest.
