KOZHIKODE: Congress is preparing strong protests in the state today in response to police roughing up Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil. UDF will hold a protest meeting in Perambra at 3 pm. MP KC Venugopal will inaugurate the protest meeting. Protests continued at many places last night. The police had a tough time ameliorating the protesters. Some activists even blocked the national highway.
The Youth Congress came out in the capital to declare support for Shafi. There was a huge clash during the Secretariat March. In Kollam too, activists staged demonstrations and blockades late into the night. In Chavara, Youth Congress activists blockaded the police station and the road. In Karunagappally, the police forcibly removed the Youth Congress members who were blocking the highway.
In Alappuzha, around ten activists reached the national highway in protest at night. The activists blocked the national highway at the Kalarcode junction, leading to a scuffle. Traffic on the Alappuzha highway bridge was completely paralysed. The protest lasted for about an hour. The activists were forcibly arrested and removed by the police. Youth Congress activists attempted to block the national highway at the Kalamassery HMT junction and Aluva in Ernakulam, resulting in clashes.
A protest demonstration was held in Ernakulam under the leadership of DCC President Mohammed Shiyas. Youth Congress workers also held a demonstration in Perumbavoor. Workers also took to the streets in Thodupuzha to protest. In Thrissur, a scuffle broke out between workers and the police. The Youth Congress workers shouted slogans against the Chief Minister in Palakkad. Workers blocked the road in Mananthavady, Wayanad.
