Body of second student who drowned in river in Kannur found

IRITTY: The body of the second female student, who went missing after being swept away by strong currents in Padiyoor Poovam river, part of Pazhassi water body. The body of Surya, of Sreelakshmi House in Naalaam Peedika in Chakkarakkallu, is the second to be found after the body of Shahrbana, of Hafzath Manzil in Edayannoor, was found on Thursday morning. They were students of SIBGA Arts and Science College in Irikkur.


Both of them were swept away on Tuesday around 4 pm. Yesterday, scuba teams from Iritty, Peravoor, Thalassery, Koothuparamba, Kannur, Payyannur and Mattannur fire rescue stations searched various areas up to Pazhassi Dam but could not find the two. A 30-member team of NDRF from Chennai had reached the spot by dusk. They began their search activity at 6 am on Thursday.

People flock to the accident site

People from the homes of the students who were involved in the accident came in great number to the accident spot since Wednesday morning. A large number of politicians also arrived at the spot. K Sudhakaran MP, Sunny Joseph MLA, CPM central committee member PK Sreemathi, Iritty Municipality chairperson K Sreelatha, Vice Chairman PP Usman, CPM district secretary MV Jayarajan, DCC president Martin George, Former Anthoor Municipality chairperson PK Shyamala, Pathiyoor panchayat president B Shamsuddin, Payam panchayat president P Rajani were among the politicians who came to the spot. Apart from the ADM, Iritty Tehsildar VS Lali Mol, Deputy Tehsildars Sijoy K Paul, NK Manoj, Padiyur, village officers, Iritty Police Station officers were also present to coordinate the rescue operation.
